If you don’t have the money for it, you can work and save for it.
I dated a bean counter aka accountant and she had £7k debt. HOW??
She didn’t have luxuries and wore ‘Primark’ clothes, not an obnoxious taste at all.
She had the disease to please. Buying alcohol for her so called friends.
Friendship meant everything to her and she bought their love and acceptance at the expense of her debt.
I watched mum being careful with money as a kid, so I always acted sensibly and she always told me she wouldn’t look after me when I’d be 18.
I didn’t want credit cards.
I was stuck in Andorra and my bank didn’t have a branch to withdraw money from. A courier would come too late to pay for the hotel bill. My best friend agreed to come herself (despite being soaked with the rain) to give me the cash.
I then accepted 2 credit cards to ensure I’d never get stuck.
People is scared of them, I had 5 because of offers. I always paid them on time, I never paid a fee.
Banks are very sneaky and they will try to get you in debt. I asked them to pay the balance in full, and the online banking showed the opposite. I noticed it straight away and corrected it.
I spent £25 once, and I noticed a 0.50p charge. I rung the bank and they told me it was an insurance.
I asked them to remove it as it was pointless. Years later Payment Protection Insurance Claims soared, and I wasn’t stung as I’m eagled eyed for these things. I could complain but my bank has always been lovely other than that time.
3 bank accounts had savings deals if you put £1k each month. I used the same £1k that was coming in and out of those monthly. To inflate their records saying ‘this much money came in’ I guess.
We all have average salaries, but some people choose to spend it on drugs or pleasing people out of social pressure.
People will often cry for money, yet if you observed their spending habits you’d be shocked at how little discipline they have.
If you are dying for payday you are in for a life of stress.
I went backpacking for 6 months, I saved up for it first.
Nationwide bank in UK gives you £100 if I refer you, but people don’t have the will, need or patience to make an effort. I do 😉
Years ago, UK was snowed under. I had to do a crown at my dentist’s back home, so it would take time, specially in Christmas
20th Dec – I was flying home, I checked the airline’s website, as I got to check in, flight cancelled – I had to join a big queue of customer service.
After a few hours, they sent us home ‘Book any economy ticket, we will pay for it’ they announced via speaker. I joined another queue of internet cafe to book a 1 way ticket, £250 for next day with British Airways. I took the coach back home.
21st Dec – I was lucky to get a lift to Heathrow, the roads were dangerous I checked the airline’s website, as I got to check in, flight cancelled. I had to join a big queue of customer service.
After a few hours, they sent us home. A staff from British Airways spoke to me. “I cannot just keep going home it’s hard to get to the airport with this snow ‘There is an European law that says the airline will pay for accommodation costs.’ Is that true? Please get someone higher up to confirm. ‘Yes it is’ he wrote down his name. ‘The closest room to Heathrow airport please’. £230
I ordered fish chips for £17 bank blocked my credit card. I couldn’t pay as I didn’t have a debit card on me or cash, I signed for it.
22nd Dec – I rung the bank, I asked them to increase my credit card limit to unblock it as I was stuck!
I couldn’t change the flight online, so I bought another one for £250 more for the 24th December.
I joined yet another customer services queue, luckily I had some breakfast before. Hours later, the lady at the desk says ‘There is a flight in 3 hours’ FML OK I’LL TAKE IT.
I got to check in, we boarded the plane, there was a delay unfreezing the plane and finally I got to my destination!
This taught me:
Take 2 credit cards with me everywhere again, if one fails, you’ll be safe with the other one.
Take a debit card and some cash.
Get a laptop.
Get mobile internet.
Easyjet was lovely, they refunded me automatically after 2 months.
BritishAirways tried to ditch responsibility asked me to claim with an insurance company. Last time they said ‘It will take 8 weeks’ the money never arrived. I bought 2 flights, I flew once, they didn’t get this as surname was misspelt slightly. After 8 months I had a refund.
I heard a family slept in the airport as they didn’t enquire.
